Can't get moniter to work

Hello
I have a Dell computer Optiplex GX110 and hooked up a Compacq mz749 moniter. The problems is when we boot up the computer the it freezes at the Updating Hardware into data base and will not go any further.
When in safe mode it will work but won't let you onto the internet or do some other things.

Have Windows ME
600MHz processor
DSL Modem

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks anyway . It is very old I think. Anyway after sitting like that all night it suddenly flashed off then came on again and now it works. I'm baffled but not going to try to figure it out.
