I got an IPod shuffle for Christmas When I try to download Itunes I get an error message. It says : There is a problem with the Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run.

Apple says this is a microsoft problem.

Microsoft says I don't have support on my pc anymore.

I am not very computer savy. My latest xp service pack is 3 and i couldn't find a download for service pack 4. Could this be the problem? Any other ideas? I'm completely lost here and thinking I'll have to return the IPod. :(

Thanks all and Happy New Year!

Thank so much for your help. I did finally get Itunes installed and it's reading my IPod.

Now the damn thing won't charge. I've tried the front usb port and the back one. They told me the front ones don't have enough power sometimes. :confused

Neither one worked. Maybe I've got a defective IPod?

If other devices work in those USB ports ( and they are at least USB 2) then I would suspect a faulty IPOD. Try it on a different computer.

    Hi

If not charging as TimW says try another PC to narrow the ipod as being the faulty item, if it works ok in another PC then its possible depending on how many USB devices you have plugged in that the USB hub power is maxed out.

While I do charge my ipod and iphone via USB on the PC its a powerd hub off my keyboard or I use the apple plug adapter, luckly get one free with iphone but got one for my neices for xmas for her ipod saves using PC all the time.

But via PC unlpug all USB hardware apart from keyboard and mouse and try ipod, but is likely the USB hub on your PC has not enough power so a powered hub is the way to go (model shown is example only)
