Cant Get My Laptop Online, Suggestions?

I really don't know much about these things but I just fired up an older Sony Vaio laptop and can not get it to connect to my wireless signal. When I click "repair" I get a message indicating that it could not renew IP address.

The signal is there and it's strong, I just don't know how to go about fixing my issue. (I am typing this from another computer on the same wireless signal)

Any help or guidance would be great!

 

You didn't press the switch that turns the wifi off, did you?

 

Is your wireless hidden? What OS are ye using? xp, vista, 7?

I am on, thanks for the responses. I called netgear and received instructions. I had to change some settings in my router security so that the older XP could access the signal

 

Awesome, that ye got it working. Though, would be nice for more detailed info. So, others using search, could find an answer. Just my humble opinion.

 

Evidently, when I set up my Netgear router security I did so with my new MacBook Pro and set it up with a security setting that was too complex/updated for the old XP system to make it past without substantial modification.
We went into the router settings and lowered the level of security and changed the password/key. We then went into the settings menu on the XP machine and changed its internet access settings so that it could now access.
Sorry I can't provide more details, I was taking instruction via telephone from a guy in New Delhi at about 11:00 PM, I don't remember much:-o
