I can't get on the internet on one of my pc's. I have no problem with my laptop (wireless). I'd be screwed if that Dell was the only pc I had. DON'T BUY FROM DELL.http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/icons/icon8.gif

I am assuming that it is not a router issue.

    Here is what I've tried:

Reseting my wireless router and cable router

Repairing my network conection, and disabling my network connection.

Uninstalling and reinstalling my web browser. When I did that, I got an error message about my IP. Too bad, I couldn't read the Microsoft page that went with it.

Is there a diagnostic tool I can use?. Tell me where I could find the logs for my system error, and I will post it here.

I am using cable internet from Charter, and A Dell XPS 200 pc.

Well, is the computer talking to your router?
Does the computer get an IP?
    Can you ping the router?
    Can you ping the laptop?
Can you ping an internet address like * ping www.yahoo.com * ?

Just a start but is the router running DHCP and the computer not or vice versa. Is there an IP conflict with the laptop?

I guess that all the millions of people that buy Dell do not have Internet connection ;)'

Did you played around with Windows service to gain "Power"?

It seems that some of the srvices that are related to proper Network operation are no working.

Look at the services on the computer that does work and set it similarly on the Dell.

In General, you can debug the Network Setting of the computer following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation( http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost ).

Step Two. Verify Basic network setting in the OS, http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify

If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack, ( http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet ).

Once you ascertain that the Network settings per-se are configured correctly.

    Wireless, check the basics.

I disabled Norton Protection Center over a month ago. I re-enabled it, but not results.

It may help to know my LAN connection properties indicates that I am receiving and sendg packets.

My first problem with my pc involved my video card failing, also sometimes my sound doesn't work either. It took me a long time to fix the video adapter. Many other people have had the same problems. Their techs. would simply have me mannuallly reinstall windows.

OK, I've read the links that Cat5e suggested. I tried Winsockfix and LPSfix, no luck. I've not done a full unistall of Internet explorer (I think), and I've not TCP/IP reset. Right now, I'm trying Norton GoBack to see if that helps.

I've not tried the malware removal because it's very rare with my Norton Antivirus running, and I regularly check for that. If Norton GoBack doesn't work then I will do a full virus and malware check.

OK, the nuclear option worked. I should have tried that in the first place, but then I wouldn't have learned as much.

I first encountered the issue when I visited www.cyberhome.com, and attempted to download a file. I am afraid to try it again, but I will anyways.

    Well, I'll be darned

I isolated the problem to a passive FTP setting in internet explorer. When I unchecked this, Norton found "backdoor.SubSeven trojan horse virus, and blocked it.
