cant get online,ver DSL, HP laptop, realtek e-net card

    When I plug the dsl line into the lap top it says on the "obtaining ip address" then after a min or 2 it says "unable to obtain ip address. The strange thing is that i can move the dsl cable from the laptop to my pc and it goes right online immediately. it is always online, the modem is hooked through a router that is always on. if i click properties in the ethernet card, it has "sent packets but no received packets....says it is connected at 100mbps too. The card is enabled and all other settings seem to be right? anyone have any suggestions? Thanks,

    open Network Connections up > Right click Properties your LAN > highlight TCP/IP > Properties and check that Obtain IP Address & DNS Server Auto are both checked
