    I've got a client's computer that won't get online.
    Things I've tried:
*Several Different browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox). Also tried to update Malwarebytes.
*Checked LAN settings. It's set to automatically detect.
*TCP/IP settings are set to obtain IP address automatically and obtain DNS server automatically.
*I tested it at the clients site and at my router as well (which I know is working) so I know it's not the router/modem.
*I scanned and removed any malware with updated Spybot.
*Tried running in safe mode with networking, still didn't work.
*Pinging www.google.com gets a request time out
*Pinging 74.125.224.72 (one of google's ip addresses) also gets a request time out
*Pinging loopback is successful (4 sent, 4 received)
    *Ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew
    *sfc /scannow didn't find anything
*In services, DHCP client and DNS client services are running
*Everything in Device manager looks clear, even when I choose "show hidden devices"
*One thing I noticed in the Local Area Connection Status is that packets are being sent and received. Right now, it says about 50,000 bytes sent, and 100,000 bytes received.\
*"Diagnose connection problems" in IE gets me "Windows cannot find the host name "www.google.com" using DNS"
*"Diagnose" in local area connection status gets me "Cannot communicate with DNS server (192.168.254.254)"
    Any ideas?

For XP start a command window in an admin account and type the following commands, reboot.

    netsh winsock reset catalog (Enter)
netsh int ip reset logfile.txt (Enter)

In Windows 7 or Vista type cmd in the search bar and then right click cmd.exe and select Run as administrator and type the following, reboot.

    netsh winsock reset (Enter)
    netsh int ip reset (Enter)

    Greetings...

If tgell's suggestion doesn't pan out, one other thing you might try is booting to a live Linux distro and seeing if that changes any symptoms - if Windows networking or online capability is broken but the hardware's ok, yada yada...

    *************

    Something bothers me:
What, if anything, did Spybot find and remove?

If it is XP you might try the "winsock xp fix" tool. It has worked for me in the past.

from the command prompt, what does ipconfig /all give you? Do you have a good IP and DNS server? Check a computer on the network that works, anything different? If you give the computer a static IP and a public DNS server, does it work then?

The winsock commands both give me "The following helper DLL cannot be loaded: VSHELPER.DLL AND IFMON.DLL"
"The following command was not found: winsock reset"
"The following command was not found: int ip reset"

I should have mentioned, it's Vista.
Also Spybot appeared to have only found tracking cookies.

Type these commands at an elevated command prompt and then try the winsock reset command again.

    netsh add helper WSHELPER.DLL
    netsh add helper IFMON.DLL

I get the same response- "The following helper DLL cannot be loaded: WSHELPER.DLL and IPMON.DLL and WSHELPER.DLL again.

Look at these articles. You may be able to get it to reset with the automatic fix.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

But first. Open IE then Tools>Internet Options. Click the connections tab. Then the Advanced Button under LAN settings. Is the Proxy server box checked and an address in the address box? If so, write down the settings and uncheck the box. Then see if you can connect.

Proxy Server box is not checked.

WSHELPER.DLL and IPMON.DLL should be listed in C:\Windows\System32. Are they on the computer? They may be located in a folder called Service Pack Files. If they are not there, can you copy them from a Vista computer with the same service pack. You will have to register the dll files after you copy them.
