[quite]setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.[/quote] That says it all. Either your hard drive is toast or the cable is bad and the hd is not detected.
Easiest thing to try, replace the hd cable.
If that doesn't get the hd recognized, then remove the hd, attach it by USB cable to another computer and see if that computer can see the hd.

    Hi,

It might be that you need SATA drivers for the HD to be recognized by Windows setup. You might be able to change a setting in BIOS to get the HD recognized. Which model number is the xps?

Have you tried F8 to get a list of startup options where you can disable automatic restart on error so that you can get a better look at the blue screen to get the error codes and any file names mentioned? It might be useful for troubleshooting.

Do you have "disable automatic reboot on system failure" in the F8 options? If so try that and see if it will stay on the blue screen.

I would disable automatic reboot on system failure as I mentioned in my last post if that option is available so you can read the blue screen.

But, if you want to get the recovery console to see your HD you can hit F2 at the Dell screen to enter BIOS/Setup.
Then go to the Drives section.
Find Sata Operation and toggle the choices till you see RAID Autodetect/ATA and set it to that. Then Esc to exit BIOS and save the changes.

The XP CD should then see the HD.

Most likely there is no password: Simply leave it blank and press the <ENTER> key.

I am sorry to have to say this ... but it seems that you are snookered!

Perhaps if you can follow sach2's instructions and provide information on the blue screen error, and describe the problem you are having, and what led to the problem, we might be able to provide an alternative solution.

What exactly were you going to do after logging in to the XP Recovery Console if you could have done it?

I have tried this as well, and still get the "no hard drive installed" error when I run the XP CD and try to do a "R" repair.
I have a Dell DXG 051, and I cannot get anything done with it right now. The boot up has the alert: "load needed DLLS for kernel."

Thanks for the reply. I was asking if you used the shift + F10 to access the command prompt with an XP OS cd. I thought shift + F10 only worked in Vista and Win7.

I didn't think it worked for XP but now I know it does.

    Thanks again.
