Hi. I have a network of 5 computers and 1 printer. All are running XP Pro, except a laptop running XP home.

The problem is with one of the XP Pro boxes, I'll call it Kathie's PC.

We can all network with eachother via the Microsoft Windows Network, with the workgroup name "office," except for Kathie's PC. Although she also has a workgroup called "office," none of us can see her PC, and she can't see any of ours.

So I did an ipconfig/all on her PC, and found that her IP address is 10.1.10.16, while the rest of ours are 192.168.1.101, with only the last 3 numbers differing.

All the computers are hardwired to the same router, so I'm wondering why she has the different IP address. I also tried giving her a static IP address (making sure her last 3 were not identical to anyone else's), but that just made it so she couldn't get online at all.

So I put it back to automatically obtain IP address, which is how the rest of our computers are set too.

Any ideas why hers is different, and how she can get on to the network with the rest of us?

    thanks,

    -Emery

    Welcome to MajorGeeks,

Can you check the number of DHCP leases that are allowed in the router configuration? This may need to be increased.

is the subnet mask the same?

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, the subnet masks are all at 255.255.255.0

How do I check the number of DHCP leases?

    thanks,

the DHCP setting should be on the router, only one device should be providing DHCP on the network. If you cant find it post the make and model of the router and we could take a closer look if the manual is online.

You should be able to get to the router configuration pages by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser.
If the router is still set up for default username and password for access, Here is a listing for those. DHCP leases should be in the basic set up of the router.

Not all routers use 192.168.1.1 for an address. We would need the make and model as stated earlier to give proper instructions on how to reach it.

Is Kathy's PC connected to the same router as everyone else?
If the subnet is 255.255.255.0 for both then the possible range is 254 PCs, but the router can change how they are handed out. But that is not the real issue here, the IPs are.

I am picturing the internet connection going into a hub that has her PC & and a router connected that the rest of the PCs attach to the second router. So she is getting an IP from the Internet connection and everyone else is behind a different router.. that is the only senerio I can come up with for having 2 DHCP servers handing out different ranges, because you did say that all PCs were "obtain IP via DHCP" correct?

    am I right?
    Describe the topology, plz.

Hi guys. Well, it seems we're supposed to have two routers here, so most likely Kathie is just on a different one. One is from the cable company, and another is a linksys router. I thought the cable company would only have supplied a modem, but when I called the contractor that originally set this network up (before I was hired), they said that they thought there were two routers involved.

So I did some snooping in the cabinet behind the coffee maker, and it does indeed look like two routers. So now all I have to do is figure out who's wire is connected to which port, and hopefully switch hers to the router the rest of us are on. There are more wires plugged in than there are computers in the office, so probably a couple are open.

Hopefully this does it, thanks for everyone's help, you guys rock.
