These should probably be in 2 separate threads but after spendiing an hour trying to figure out how to post, they are going in one thread. I have an HP notebook dv6335ca. Suddenly, out of the blue, when I start up, I end up with HP Quickplay even though I have unchecked it. I don't know what it is or why it is there. How do I get rid of it.

Secondly, suddenly I have lost my add and remove programs icn fron control panel. Where did it go and how do I get it back?

    Help and thanks!

    Try this for the quickplay:

    Start>>Run.

In Run type "regedit" without the quotes, click OK.

In regedit navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

Look in the right pane and see if HP Quickplay is listed. If it is, right click on it and select "delete".

For the Add/Remove icon, while in regedit navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load

In the right pane look for appwiz.cpl, right click on it and select "delete".

Here's a few other things you can try to get the Add/Remove icon back in the Control Panel.

First, and I should have put this in my previous post, have you ran any spyware/virus scans lately? Some spyware/viruses can cause problems of this nature.

If your system is clean try this:

    Start>>Run.

In Run type "regsvr32 appwiz.cpl" without the quotes, click OK.

If that doesn't work, try to open Add/Remove programs using the Run feature.

    To do this:

    Start>>Run

In Run type (or copy and paste) "rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL appwiz.cpl" without the quotes, click OK.

If Add/Remove doesn't open, it could be due to a corrupt or missing appwiz.cpl in the System32 folder.

You can try replacing it with a new copy through System File Checker. Rather than running the whole SFC routine, you can go to Start>Run, type in "msconfig" (without the quotes), click OK and on the General tab, click the "Expand File" button. Tell it you want to extract appwiz.cpl, tell it to extract it from either C:\I386 or your XP CD (which you'll need to put in the CD drive) and tell it to extract it to C:\Windows\System32.

    Hope this helps.
