Can't get updates for xp pro or windows defender error 0x80072ee2

Tried all the microsoft methods (about 3 times) to repair this error code, all to no avail. Please advise me on what to do so that I may receive automatic updates and updates for windows defender. I'm on a home computer running xp pro with a direct connection to the internet, no proxy. Checked Services pertaining to this seem to all be on unless I'm missing something. The only firewall is the microsoft firewall. Tried turning it off and still cannot access updates. Did an ipconfig /flushdns. What am I missing? Your help would be greatly appreciated.:confused

What service pack are you at with XP?

Are you connecting via a router to the internet or directly through a modem, if so what models?
At times the MTU setting of the modems can cause WU issues so access your modem/routers panel and change the MTU to 1492

Could try re-registering the components to WU, click start > run and type each one at a time.
