Can't install ANY antivirus software!

It's wierd. Any antivirus software I try to install will error out before install completes. AVG says "insufficient system resources". Avast and Comodo both get about 75% finished and then stop with "access is denied". AntiVir installs completely (with 2 errors during install), but the active real-time protection is turned off and the choice to turn it on is greyed out. Before this started, the free version of Zone Alarm was briefly installed, then uninstalled. Avast installed OK before ZA was installed. Then I tried to install Comodo firewall, and it errored out, so I removed Avast thinking that had something to do with it. So: it appears as if NO security software can be successfully installed after removing Zone Alarm. I've run reg cleaners, sfc /scannow, system restore, temp file cleaners, Dial A Fix, Windows Update.... nothing has fixed the problem. The PC has 384mb of memory and a 120gb hard drive (90% free space) and was recently formatted and WinXP Pro SP2 was installed. I haven't had any trouble installing other software, just antivirus and firewalls. I'm going to try some other software today (antispyware stuff) and see what happens.

UPDATE: Comodo firewall installed OK and seems to be running OK. Avast installed OK but the "On Access" protection cannot be turned on (the same problem as with AntiVir). It says something about an "RPC error". I'm researching it now....

Another Update: Uninstalled Avast. Installed Comodo AV. Installation went OK. Upon reboot: "ERROR- Number CAV003. Details: On access scanner failed to start." Also upon rebooting, it looked like the FW took out the internet/network connection, but I was able to fix that. So it seems that all the OS repair stuff I did (listed in my first post) at least allows for complete installation of AV software, just none of them will run the real-time active protection. Does anyone know anything about this or the RPC error mentioned by the Avast error reporter? Has anyone ever had ZoneAlarm cause a problem like this?

Not a clue at the moment ...but are you sure you removed all traces of ZoneAlarm?

Now Comodo FW isn't running correctly. It just popped up 3 different monitoring things that could not be started (network monitoring, etc). I'm pretty sure all of ZA has been removed. I ran CCleaner's reg clean, and Eusing's reg clean, and a 3rd one just to see what it would find (not much). When running the cleaners, I looked thru the lists of stuff they found and saw no mention of ZA anywhere, but I'll look thru the reg manually, and I'll look at the HD too.... Maybe a reload is in my future?

I would reformat, pick one of each, antivirus, firewall, and any other programs you want to use, too many of the same type cause's too many problems. ed

Yeah, I know.... I'm just trying to get ANYTHING to work correctly at this point. All the different AV's will install (except AVG which errors out with "insufficient system resources") but none of the active protection will work. Avast errors out with an RPC error when I try to turn on the on-access scanner; AntiVir has the on-guard selection greyed out so I can't do anything at all with it. I ran sfc /scannow: nothing. I found some removal info at Zone Alarm's web site and followed that: nothing. And last nite I did a safe reload "over the top" and got no-where! Still the same problems. I have no idea how this happened. Everything else on the PC runs perfectly. I'm curious as to why AVG gets an "insufficient system resources" error, while Avast and AntiVir get RPC errors, and in the event viewer, there's ID 7000 with "access is denied" errors.... Maybe a format and reload is needed at this point unless someone has a brilliant fix ;)
    THANKS!

Seems to me that you just need to up your ram. 348 mg just isn't enough. in my opinion.
