So I'm having a serious issue with my work computer. it's a POSx, which is used for mainly restaurants. Unfortunately we gave it to the tech guy next door (my boss did), he ran a virus scan and accidentily deleted a few crucial system files.

I took over and just figured I would install a seperate XP and just grab the files we needed as far as work info goes. Unfortunately when I went to install xp, it kept getting all sorts of errors, whether it would hang on the installation, or other things.

So I decided a different approach, and got ubuntu live. I got in everthing worked fine, however when I went to actually install it, I got an I/O error. I'm assuming this has something to do with the fact that I'm using sata and it's looking for IDE? I have no idea.

    - Tried multiple xp cds AND ubuntu, both on disc and usb
    - tried multiple HDDs
    - Checked ram and others and they're all working fine.

The mobo is g31-m7 te. PLEASE help anyone.

Have you tried a Repair install of the original OS?

Or if you can boot into Safe Mode, you could run the System File Scanner to replace the deleted files:
    Code:
    sfc /scannow

I don't know the pos type, but it's an all in one. I can't get to safe mode or anything at this point, the original OS has been wiped so many times in me trying to reformat this thing.

    - when I try to install ubuntu I get some sort of I/O error, can't access database or something like that.

    - XP freezes at 20% everytime during a format, regardless of the HDD. However even when I formatted in another pc and brought it over, it would freeze up on copying files, or eventually just keep giving me errors file could not be copied.

I'm running out of time unfortunately, need this back within a few hours :(.
