I can't install anything on my laptop. I recently installed Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron and I am unable to install anything. I download the file and a lot of the time it says it doesn't have a valid digital structure. The installation starts but nothing happens.
    Please help!!!

    Hi

Was this install of Windows 7 an upgrade install and if so from what Windows version or a clean new install?

After installing Windows 7 did you update it and did you also install all the drivers? Check Device Manager for yellow ! marks, if you have any tell us what they are?

    What model Dell Inspiron?

What Security software do you have installed? please name all? but to test disable them all and try a download, does it work?

    Try installing in Safe Mode?

An outside chance is you may have malware, so run the guide HERE and start a thread in the malware forum and attach the logs as requested, especially if any of the scans have found malware.

It was an upgrade install and i previously had windows vista and I didn't have any of these problems.

How do you update? Checked the device manager and they are all fine except i got a message earlier saying

"Instructions For Fixing Hard Disk Errors:

We strongly recommend that you backup your computer to avoid potential data loss.

After you have backed up your computer, you should contact your computer manufacturer or other hardware technical support to determine if the disk with errors needs to be repaired or replaced.

We recommend that you store these printed instructions together with the media used to back up your data (for example, the CDs or USB flash drive used to store your backup), so that everything you need to fix your computer is in one place.

The following information is provided to help the hardware technical support person diagnose the hard disk with errors.

    Disk Name: ST9320320AS ATA Device
    Volume: C:\;D:\"

I dont have any security software installed because I am unable to start the start the installation. I have Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.

I will try installing in Safe Mode later.

    Thanks for the reply

That indicates there is a problem with your Seagate hard drive.

    Have you done this?

    What model Dell Inspiron?

I have a favorite little tool, that could help us out if it will install. It is a VERY simple program, with a small file size (926 KB), so if it does install, we might see another bit of evidence. It's called HDD Health, and can be found here:

I got it to work on a 64-bit system proper, but here's what you need to do after installing the software (if it can), and close the program:

Start Menu>Left click on HDD Health folder>Right Click on HDD Health app file>Click on "Properties">Run in compatibility XP Service Pack 2, or 3 should already be highlighted, if not, select it>Check the box that says "Run as Administrator".>Apply>OK

It seems like a pain in the butt, but if it works it could shed a bit more light on the situation.

I have backed up my computer.

    the mekanic:

I'm afraid the installation didn't work, it didn't have a valid digital signiture!!!

Open Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
Scroll down and check off "Allow software to run or install even if the signature is invalid." This will allow any downloaded program to run even if there is no valid digital signature.

There's definitely something amiss with your installation.

Can you roll it back to Vista?

I can go back to Vista but then the purchase will be a bit of a waste of money!!!

    Not really.

You just need to "roll it back", so you at least have a working OS.

Maybe the underlying cause was in Vista. Also, that would give you a shot at trying the upgrade once again.

Worse come to worst, since you have everything backed up, you could do a fresh Vista install, then upgrade.

    All brandy new!!

    :)
