    Hi,

    Can't install any msi files. Using Windows 7 64-bit. What should I try?

    Thanks,

    Susan

    Hi Susan

    Has this issue just started with your Windows 7 PC?
    If just started did you install any new software just before the MSI files stopped working and if so what?

    Is this your PC or a works one on a corporate network?
    Are you logged in as the Admin?

    I would try this first open Services (just type at the Start Search box services) and scroll down until you see Windows Installer and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) services are Started, then try the MSI installer file again.

    This issue started recently, but I can't pinpoint when. I noticed it when I tried to install some "Stamps" in Snagit. They are .msi file. They usually install automatically, but didn't. When I double-click the .msi file, a window opens and just shows me the files.

    I am working on a standalone PC at home. I am logged on as the Admin.

    I opened the Services window. The Remote Procedure Call is started, BUT the Windows Installer IS NOT started. I'm not sure how to change that status.

    I did find a workaround on the Internet. I created a .bat file with this command line==> msiexec/i %1. If I drag an .msi file to the batch file, it does run.

    How can I change the Windows Installer file to "Start" status?

    Okay, in Windows 7, click the round "start" button, type in the box CMD (press enter)
    type in:
    ftype > list.txt (press enter)
    notepad list.txt (press enter)
    In notepad, click Edit, then find. Type in msi in the "Find what" box.

    If you don't see this:

    Msi.Package="%SystemRoot%\System32\msiexec.exe" /i "%1" %*
    Msi.Patch="%SystemRoot%\System32\msiexec.exe" /p "%1" %*

    we need to fix that.

    Btw, the windows installer should be in manual mode. It only activates if you are installing anything.

    Thanks. Followed your suggestion. Found these three lines.

    Msi.Package="%SystemRoot%\System32\msiexec.exe" /i "%1" %*
    Msi.Patch="%SystemRoot%\System32\msiexec.exe" /p "%1" %*
    MSInfoFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\msinfo32.exe "%1"

    Any suggestions?
