Can't install my HP LaserJet 1020 printer

Hi, I've never had a problem with my HP Laserjet 1020 printer but somehow it no longer was listed as an available printer on my PC. Therefore, I used the HP factory installation disc and went through the installation process. However, I still can't install the printer and receive the following error message:

Cannot install this hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware (HP Laserjet 1020). An error occurred during the installation of the device: The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because th INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor. Click Finish to close the wizard.

Any comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

 

There is a Laserjet 1020 and a 1020 Plus. Not sure what OS you're using but here are the links:

There are versions from Win98 to Vista and Linux.

 

You didn't mention what version of Windows you're using and what led up to this problem. You're saying that one day the printer just stopped being recognized for no reason? Like, you just booted to the desktop, and the printer was gone? Or it was still there but not printing, or would error out when trying to print? Or was listed as an "unknown device"? We really need more info. Mainly your Windows version and a description or exactly what's going on know, and exactly what happened before the problem started.

1. I'm using Windows XP Professional, SP2.
2. Yes, the printer stopped being recognized. Sorry, I'm not aware of anything leading up to this strange occurrence. Never encountered anything like this.
3. Currently, if I attempt to print, I receive a message stating that I need to install a printer. Unfortunately, when I attempt to install this printer, the installation process is not successful.

If there is any additional information that I can provide, please don't hesitate to ask. I really do appreciate folks taking the time to try and help a novice like me.
