cant install sp1 or sp2

ok now i dont know what to do as i keep getting an error message that states that i cannot install sp2.

the product key used to install windows is invalid please contact your system administrator or retailer to obtain a valid product key.

have tried it from the web and alos i have the disc that they have sent me. any clue on how i can update my pc to sp2? could it be cause i dont have sp1 installed? this happened when i just tried to instal sp1

anoyne have a clue as to what do i do now? this OS came with the pc and i have had this pc for about 7-8 years and i dont have any of the original stuff

If you had the PC that long then it didn't come with XP.

Go buy a valid XP License. Try Price Watch

If you have the original XP cd, you can contact Microsoft, they are usually very helpful. As Shadow mentioned, XP is not 7 or 8 years old, so our assumption is you have a pirated copy and you will need to buy a copy.

what if i dont want to buy a copy is it ok to have what i currently have?

You do not need to purchase xp but you will have to stick with what you have which i presume would be window's 98. But if you are using a false product of xp then that indeed will not install sp1 or sp2. My sound advice to you would be to stick with windows 98 and get there service pack update from here

I'm with Nick on this, either go back to 98 or buy a license for XP. You won't be able to apply either SP1 or SP2 without a valid license. And if you run XP without it being up to date then you are asking for problems.
