Can't Install SP2!

So if you've been following my saga, I had two hard drives, I had to merge them because the main one (Cdrive) was full and I contantly got messages saying so. So I used Partition Magic 8, merged them and am now noticing some problems.

    1. When I try to install SP2 - which I did before I merged my hard drives, but I guess it didn't take, it gives me the following message: "Setup could not verifiy the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer."

    So what does that mean?

Another thing that I'm having a hard time with is that things are automatically downloading (and failing to do so) in my D: Drive (the one that I merged into the Cdrive) and of course it says "D drive is full or unavailable" and yet I can't for the life of me figure out why this is happening. I tell it to download in my C: Program Files, but then it gives me the D: Drive message. One specific program is Incredimail. It just won't open. So I uninstalled it (I've been meaning to get rid of it for a long time) but when I re-installed it (hoping to get my email addresses that were in there) it tried to go into D:\

I ran Drive Mapper in Partition Magic 2 times to make sure my D: is completely gone and it says it has done it successfully, so why is this happening?

Would love any help. I feel like my computer is ruined because I merged my partitions.

    THanks so much,
    Stephanie

Did you completely format the drive when you were finished?

Hi Stephanie, I don't know about your D drive problem, but you'll find Cryptographic service in: run>services.msc>enter. It explains the service and allows you to start or stop it. Bill

I never saw a button that said "format drive now" or anything. But I assumed when Partition Magic 8 was said it was finished that it did everything for me. HOWEVER, I do remember it saying that it will run Map Driver automatically after the reboot and it never did. I had to run it manually...and that was after I had to repair it because it wasn't working propertly. LEt me know if you think I need to format my new drive (it's my C and D drive combined) and HOW to do it. I'm completely clueless as to how. Thanks so much! Stephanie

Bill, thanks for showing me how to check it. It was already on, so I restarted it. I'll run the SP2 update now and see if anything has changed. Thanks. Stephanie

So I ran the update again and I still got the message saying it could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf and make sur ehte Cryptographic service is running. WHich it is. Any more thoughts are appreciated.

Kodo, I did this and the cryptsvc stopped and started fine - but the second line "ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2" told me "access denied" I entered it exactly like I just wrote - so if the % sign stands for something else, let me know. I tried reinstalling SP2 and it gave me the same message.

adryn and I posted the same thing.. find this folder
    C:\windows\system32\catrtoot2

and stop the crypto service, then rename the folder to oldcatroot2 and then start the crypto service.

So I did everything you told me to (I renamed the folder catroot22) and followed the directions in the link. All checked out OK and I still got the same message when I tried to install SP2. I restarted my computer thinking that was it, but no luck. I'm desperate here - if you have any other ideas, I'll take them! Stephanie

  13. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

so you registered all those files that were listed in the resolution?

  14. SRBast

    SRBast Specialist

Yes. Was that wrong? Also, I renamed the file as you said - but it created a copy of it with the new name "OldCatroot2" and kept the CatRoot2 folder as well. I then deleted the copy and tried to rename the original CatRoot2 and it said access denied. So then I restored the copy "OldCatRoot2" and I'm going to restart cryp and see how it goes.

  15. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

no, not wrong.. just making sure.

go back to windows update.. select all the critical updates except sp2 (if they show) and install them first. Reboot and then try SP install again.

The website says that it's not available due to high demand. So more to come in a bit.

was hoping that would be on the list of post SP1 hotfixes on WU.

So I copied and pasted the following Resolutions and I wanted to tell you what happened with each so it gives you an idea of what's wrong with my laptop. Some things just wouldn't work at all.

Method 1: Rename the Edb.log file
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
    3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst
The first time I did this I got "System cannot find the specified item." So I did it again and then I got "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." So this didn't work.

Method 2: Set Cryptographic Services to automatic
    1. Start the Administrative Tools utility in Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Services.
    3. Right-click Cryptographic Services, and then click Properties.
    4. Click Automatic for Startup type, and then click Start.
This worked fine. But got the same message when installing SP2.

Method 3: Rename the Catroot2 folder
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
    3. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line: net stop cryptsvc
      ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2
      net start cryptsvc
      exit
Important Do not rename the Catroot folder. The Catroot2 folder is automatically recreated by Windows, but the Catroot folder is not recreated if it is renamed.

A few things wrong here. From the previous messages, I DID rename the Catroot folder to OldCatroot2 and it created a copy of the folder. After I read this IMPORTANT notice here, I deleted it. I then followed steps 1-3 (as I did so very long ago) and the cryptsvc started and stopped fine - but the middle command (the renaming) gave me "access denied." That must mean something, yes?? So this didn't work.

Method 4: Reregister DLL files that are associated with Cryptographic Services

    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
    3. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line:

Note Click OK if you are prompted.

Note Microsoft Windows 2000 does not include the Sccbase.dll file. If you are running a version of Windows 2000, omit the Sccbase.dll file. regsvr32 softpub.dll
      regsvr32 /u wintrust.dll
      regsvr32 /u initpki.dll
      regsvr32 /u dssenh.dll
      regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll
      regsvr32 /u gpkcsp.dll
      regsvr32 /u sccbase.dll
      regsvr32 /u slbcsp.dll
      regsvr32 /u cryptdlg.dll
      regsvr32 /u softpub.dll
      exit
    4. Restart your computer.
    5. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
    6. At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each command).

Note Click OK if you are prompted.

I did this and it worked. But still got error message when installing SP2.
Method 5: Remove the hidden attribute from %Windir% and from its subfolders
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
    3. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line: attrib -s -h %windir%
      attrib -s -h %windir%\system32
      attrib -s -h %windir%\system32\catroot2
      exit
I did this, but after each line - nothing happened, it just went to the next prompt. So I'm assuming that this did not work. Even if this is what should happen, I still get the error message for SP2.

Please help more if you can. I know this must be frustrating for you - but I need and love your help. Thanks so much, Stephanie

    You stopped at method 5.

    What about?

Method 6: Set non-driver signing policy to silently succeed

Method 7: Temporarily turn off Trusted Publishers Lockdown and install the appropriate certificates to your trusted publishers certificate store

Method 8: Verify the status of all certificates in the certification path and import missing or damaged certificates from another computer

Since some of them didn't work, I wasn't sure if I should continue - but now that you say I should - I'll go ahead and do it! Thanks, S.

OK, what were the results of the last few steps you performed?

    Other things to check:

Date and time must be correct, or reasonably so (Its not the year 2036 yet, :D)

Go through this, again, this time from Safe Mode, in the default Administrator account.

Stop the cryptographic service from start, run services.msc
Rename C:\windows\system32\catroot2 to catroot2.old, or something
    Start the cryptographic service

    From start, run:

    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    regsvr32 wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 initpki.dll
    regsvr32 dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
    regsvr32 sccbase.dll
    regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
    regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Install SP2 network install, while still in Safe Mode.

I know its redundant, and it may not help, but it has worked for me when it has normally failed.

2 more questions before I go into Safe Mode. Should I go into Safe Mode with my network connected? And I see that you referred me to the Professional IT installation - just wanted to make sure this is what you wanted me to do rather than the regular SP2. THanks, S.

    No, just regula\r Safe Mode.
The link I posted is for the Network Install. Its the one you want.

As for the driver signing policy...well, we will try that, only if we need to. It can be turned off in XP too. We can get to that.

A- Just realized that my laptop can only access the internet via wireless cable modem on my network - so since I'm starting in Safe Mode without Network, my guess is to download the Network SP2 (which I see is available) and go from there. Yes? Stephanie

So I did everything Adryn told me to do in Safe Mode under Administration. I, at first panicked because I saved SP2 in My Docs under User 1 (Stephanie), but I saw that you could open that while in Admin. I'm very excited because SP2 is "inspecting current configurations, etc" and I see it backing up files and the progress bar is actually MOVING - something that never happened before. IF this sucker finally installs - am I going to have to move it to User 1 account?? Or does it automatically apply to all users (which is only Admin. and Stephanie). Let me know - I'm very excited and am sending your tons of cyber hugs - Stephanie P.S. after it installs, I'm assuming I can delete the SP2 download since it's huge and no longer needed, yes??

  32. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

SP2 is a system wide update and has nothing to do with specifc users per say. You can remove the file when you're done, but I'd burn it to a cd instead, just in case you need it later :)

YEEESSSSS!!!!!! It installed it! You know - I think the trick was doing it in Admin./Safe Mode. It was the first time that renaming 'catroot2' actually worked. And the rest is history. Thank you, my friend. Now onto my Incredimail uninstall :) Love, Stephanie
