My aunt gave me her computer to "fix". It was very slow and very infected. It only had 256MB ram and the DVD Drive wouldnt open. I've cleaned it up, added ram (2gig), and a new dvd drive. Its running pretty good now but Im having an issue with Windows Media Player. To start, it has a Napster button that Id like to get rid of. Also, its WMP 10 and I would like to change to WMP 11. I have tried to do this with Windows update but it doesnt work. It completes the update process and asks me to restart but when I restart I still have WMP 10.

I tried uninstalling WMP 10 with Add/Remove Windows Components. It uninstalls fine. Then I tried installing WMP11 again but it still wont install. I get this error message:

It was not possible to complete setup; For more assistance, click Web Help.

It was not possible to complete setup; Windows Media Player 11 was not installed. Restart Windows and then run Windows Media Player Setup again.

When I click Web Help I get this extremely helpful message:

You've encountered error message C00D2AFB while using Windows Media Player. Additional information is not currently available for this error.

    Original Error Code 80070005
Original Error Message General access denied error.

I have also downloaded the WMP11 exe from Microsoft and tried installing it but the same thing happens. Im not sure what else to do.

    Hi korok,
I saw in the malware forum that the logs are clean on this machine.

A couple of things I can suggest looking at:
You are trying to do this in an administrator account on the machine?

otherwise, a quick google of that error code bought up a couple of forums where people have been faced with the same problem.
    http://forums.techarena.in/media-player/613728.htm
    http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player&tid=26efc6dc-90ff-4621-9337-9593ebe5d0d6&cat=en_US_783621db-7288-406a-b831-ce7ec6ec0188〈=en&cr=US&sloc=&p=1

It seems it is to do with permissions within the registry. Maybe you could compare notes with what they've found there?

Otherwise, if your permissions in the registry are completely borked, a slightly extreme method of restoring permissions can be found here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

Please make sure read the article thoroughly & do back up the registry before doing anything.

Hang on, sorry, I've realised the machine is running XP Home (I'll leave the above there if it helps someone else in the future)
But, if you have a look at the following, it descibes how to do this in XP Home using the SubInACL tool
