Hi there, I am having problems installing WinXP Pro on my old PC. First off I have the HDD set to ' master ' and the CDROM drive set to ' slave ' . I recently bought a genuine windows installation operating system, now when I run it it says " coudlnt copy file ? " can anyone explain this to me? because I really need this pc running, thanks .

  2. Did you recently upgrade ram on the pc cause one time i upgraded mine and attempted to install win2k and it was haveing problems like that. Then i put the old chip back in and everything worked fine.

Why do you have the hard drive and CD ROM on the same controller?

Try to keep the hard drive/s on the Primary Controller in the correct Master/Slave hierarchy, and have the optical devices (CD/DVD drives) on the Secondary Controller, again in the correct Master/Slave hierarchy.

Please outline the steps you are using to install XP as your post is not very detailed.

I have both drives on the primary channel, HDD drive is set to 'master' and CDROM drive is set to 'slave' I did swap a old chip to do the upgrading.

  5. Try taking that new chip out, intall the old one again, and try to install windows. I dont know if this is bad ram or if windows just dont like installing on updated things. Try putting the old ram chip in and installing windows again.

Put the new chip in, i really don't think thats the problem. Try to verify the cd isn't scratched in anyway.

Like Insomniac says, put the HHD on the Primary IDE channel as Master and put the CDROM on the Secondary IDE channel as Master. HDD and CDROM drives don't always play well together when on the same IDE channel as Master/Slave.

Your RAM could very well be the problem. Buying RAM 'off the shelf' is not a good way to buy RAM for your computer. Even though it may be the same type and speed as that is in your system or recommended by the manufacturer, does not mean that the RAM is compatible with your system. It is always best to get RAM that is Guaranteed to be compatible with your system/mobo. www.crucial.com is a good site to check for RAM.

Put the old RAM back into your system and try again.

  10. Yeah it could be scratches but dont be so fast to rule out the chip. Cause it doesnt matter if its brand new or 12 years old. It could be faulty from the beginning. If you didnt set the chip as if when it was first set up when you got the computer do that then try again.

Now it tells me, swenum.sys cannot be copied, what the?

  13. Wait o you have a diskdoctor. Buy one of those. Trust me on this one 30 us dollars or so but it pays off in the long run. Got one that had gotten me out of trouble countless times. Now did you put the old ram back in yet or do you still have the newer chip running?

If you're getting different errors, the CDROM is bad or it's the RAM.

  16. Could the disk be scratched though shadow? But i really have a funny feeling its the ram. Had the same problem after my hd blew and had to instal win2k again. Kept geting blue screens and different errors while trying to install the os. Once i put the old ram setup in, it ran without any problems. But if you tried the ram and no success, try to install using another cd.
