Not sure if this is OK, since it's technically not a desktop/PC issue, but you folks have always been so helpful, I figured I'd give it a shot!

I'm leaving a job soon, and my IT guy told me it's customary that email access is removed once employees are gone. Which is fine, I totally understand that. I have a company email address that looks like myname@mycompany.com. But this is all handled via Gmail. The IT guy set it up when I first started, and I've always logged into Gmail (even though it doesn't have an @gmail.com extension). But I know it's managed via some kind of admin panel on their end on Google.

He said I'll need to migrate any important emails I have in my inbox to another vanilla Gmail account that I make. I went through the migration process, trying different pop servers (pop.gmail.com and pop.mycompanyname.com) but it didn't work. It says it can't connect. And I use all my normal Gmail login/password info.

Is there a special way I need to migrate a Gmail account like this, that is handled by a site admin, to a regular Gmail account I own?

I suspect that you need to move any emails you wish to keep rather than migrate them or migrate the whole account.
Can you select all emails, then choose send as attachment & email them to a different (no corporate) account?

Set up your own GMail account then send the emails to that.
