cant open a file in External drive

Hi, I hope people can help me. I really need to get into a file in my external drive but it tells me it is corrupt. When I do a virus scan it does show the files are in there and my computer shows 1g.
What should I do?

 

How was the drive formatted mate? ntfs/fat32 etc.

 

Shot in the dark here but go into 'Disk Management' and right click on large area and choose Explore. Worth a try.

 

Thats alot for your replys guys. Toke I already tryed that but no luck. Burner I am quite ignorant where it comes to tech. Especially where it comes to formating I always try to stay away from it. Thats probably why. So I dont know how it was formated but I did try to transfer everything to my computer and then format the drive which is normally very easy where it comes to drives other than the system drive. Anyway it refused to format. more help would b great. Thanks again

 

Oh I just tryed to defrag but it said that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the drive, and please run Chkdsk. How do I do that?

 

If its showing Go into 'Disk Management' Highlight your USB drive then right click/properties/'TOOLS'/error checking.
