Can't open secure sites or update windows

This seems to be a common eneough problem but none of the fixes I've tried have done any good. I'm running windows xp sp2 and whenever i try to login to a secure site (https) or update windows i get the "unable to open page" error message, or from the windows update page i get: error number 0x80072EE7. All the common fixes(turning off firewalls, opening port 443, turning down internet security, checking all tsl and ssl boxes in internet options, system restores,upgrading from ie6 to ie7) did no good at all. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

YEAH!! I've been having tons of problems with Windows Updates in the past 2-3 days also... sometimes the fix is simply turning off Windows firewall, other times I have to enter command prompt and re-register a bunch .dll's.... and this is happening on MANY different PC's including ones with clean installs of XP Home....

You wil also see that McAFEE HAD A FAULTY FILE CAUSING THE SAME PROBLEM.

 

Having the same problem here. I can't access any microsoft site (probably any HTTPS site) and msn gives the "31000306" error.
I have tried lots of solutions, including all listed in this site and still have no luck.

 

I forgot to mention. I DO can browse any website if I use a proxy, but, of course, I browse them pretty damn slow. Msn still pops that error code.

Perhaps sfc /scannow could be worth trying if you have your disc., in case any system files have been corrupted.
