I have just pought a New Asus X55 with win 10 home installed, it seems I cannot put win 10 pro on (unless I pay) so I thought I would create a partition on the C: drive and install my win 10 pro from my disc along side the home version. That however is not possible according to my disc partition software. It says a partition cannot be created !!!
Does this mean I am stuck with win 10 home forever????

I have win 10 pro with a key I bought for my previous laptop, but it will not load on this laptop. Yes I can go through the microsoft route and pay again and I reckon this laptop is designed to do just that

You need to speak with Microsoft. The key you are deciding to use will have conditions attached to its original purchase licence. That's what will determine what hardware it can or cannot be used on.

Which partitioning software are you using?

Before you can create a new partition you have to shrink an existing one to create the required space. Have you done that?

If yo want w10 pro, you can put the disc in and upgrade to pro, within windows. That way you can choose to keep the programs etc:
Assuming you never actually used it, as your other laptop was not up to it, and you have the key to it

Upgrade using a Windows 10 Pro product key

To upgrade from Windows 10 Home if you have a Windows 10 product key:

    1. Select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & security > Activation.
    2. Select Change product key, and then enter the 25-character Windows 10 Pro product key.
    3. Select Next to start the upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

Your Win 10 Home Product Key is embedded in the UEFI and your computer is set for UEFI, Secure Boot enabled and your internal hard drive/SSD is initialized GPT.

My computer was set up the same way. I was fortunate enough to have been given a Recovery DVD.

What I had to do with mine was delete all partitions in Disk Management, re-initialize the disk as MBR and switch to Legacy Boot, Secure Boot disabled.

I tried to do a clean install of Win 8.1 Pro (it came with Win 8.1 Core). Because of the embedded Product Key, Win 8.1 Core was re-installed. I had to create a new partition to install Win 8.1 Pro. But, I also created a couple of additional partitions so, I run Win 7 Ultimate, Win 8.1 Core, Win 8.1 Pro and Win 10 Pro from the internal SSD.

You may be able to download a Recovery ISO from Asus. I was able to get a Recovery ISO for my Inspiron from Dell and have it as a backup in case the supplied DVD should become damaged/fail.

Here's something you might try (I didn't think to do this in Win 8.1 Core, Duh!):

Go to Settings -> Update & security -> Activation -> Change product key and enter your Pro Product key. See if that will upgrade your Core installation to Pro. If not, you'll probably have to go the route I took as described in my previous post.
