I have a relatively new pc (XP) & had my old hard drive transferred over to this new pc. The problem I'm having is that I can no longer play any of the videos that are stored on my computer, and am even having trouble playing music - both WMP & Media Player Classic shut down immediately upon opening the files.

I've tried quite a few solutions in MS support and tried updating to the most recent versions of both but am still getting the problems.

I've attached one of the error files for WMP & would appreciate any suggestions.

What firewall are you using? Do you have some meanings of monitoring the installation of "WS2IFSL.SYS" driver?

I was using Zone Alarm until a while ago, but after a windows update, ZA was preventing me booting up so I ditched it and have been relying on the basic Windows firewall ever since.

Regarding monitoring installation of "WS2IFSL.SYS" driver - I have no idea.

WS2IFSL.sys in conjunction with Windows Media Player is blocking access to your media. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD LEAVE YOUR SYSTEM OR PRIVACY TO WINDOWS FIREWALL FOR PROTECTION.

Sorry for the short answer, but every time I try to explain this to someone anywhere, I seem to be logged-off.
Winsocks2 loads ws2ifsl.sys which creates a backdoor (port) around your firewall. Windows media player then locks down your media folder.

Thanks. I found a solution and it had to do with Cyberlink DVD. I had an old version of that & uninistalled it, and after that, my other programs worked fine, so I am guessing that some new updates of those programs clashed with Cyberlink?

Regarding FWs, yes I will get a new one. I used ZA for years but for some reason, after a windows update months ago, ZA stops my pc booting up & it hangs on the XP screen permanently. I uninstalled, works fine, reinstalled - can't boot up again. So I need to find another firewall that I trust & doesn't interfere with everything,

    Thanks for your help.
