    Hi

I'm building a pc for a friend and everything is assembled apart from the 3.5" card reader...

it doesn't plug anywhere into the motherboard!

the board is G31T-M9 v1 and i can't find the 9 pin connector which corresponds to the plug on the card reader.

    am i missing something obvious?

I know i can get him a usb stick with a card reader in it but he's liable to lose it! he's 15...

If this motherboard doesn't support a card reader are there any alternative (internal) card readers - maybe that connect differently?

    help appreciated (thanks in advance)

Did the card reader come with the board? Different manufacturers use different pin configurations for their USB headers. The board you are using has a 9 pin USB header toward the front of the board from the SATA connections. It should also say "USB 2.0" on the board near the header.

    Hi

the problem i'm having is that none of the 9 pin motherboard sockets match the card reader plug - the hole which is filled out is not in the right place for any of them. unusual, huh?

wondered if i was missing something but i've double checked this - none of the p[lugs match - i'm wondering if the plug was incorrectly made?

does this look right to you?

Nope that is a normal plug, installed a ton of them.

See when you position that plug over the mobo the key will match up - like picture. I have the bottom of the plug and the top view of the mobo - position one over the other & it will match. Like flipping the image of the plug left over the pinout. Are you pulling anyone's leg right now? Just checking.

    Ah, I've made a boo-boo...

the yellow usb socket does in fact match the card reader plug.

BUT, the case (which was separate from board) came with 2 front usb sockets, reset button, headphone and microphone which use the yellow socket - and i don't want to omit those... (arghh!)

is there such a thing as a splitter which can split this socket into 2 (the one on the motherboard, of course)? so i can plug both in?

    thanks for help guys

Use 2 of these cables run from the back into the case and connected to the card reader. They are from Frontx.com.
Or a card that has a header on it like this one
Not all PCI cards have a usb header, most just have a plug to attach items inside the case.

Also the headphone should attach to the audio header & the reset to the front panel connectors.. not the USB header.
    Is this your first rodeo?

    Hi

Yes foogoo, well in fact this is my second pc build - the first one had 2 of these sockets as i recall. i'm just learning from scratch almost...

so let me get this right - i've got a pci card i can plug into the board which will give him 4 external 2.0 usb and one inside. I connect 2 of those cables you mentioned into the card reader plug which require a usb socket each (one of which is inside) the other outside the case. (phew, i think that's right)

there's only 4 pins on one side of the card reader plug so i won't be able to plug a 5 pin into that one. What should i do about that?

is there not one plug which goes into the card reader plug leading to one usb? that way i could connect to the usb inside (on the pci card)

The audio, headphone etc is on a separate plug by the way, you were right. I just pluged them in and forgot there were 2 coming from the case (der).

is there a single plug instead of having to plug either side of the card reader plug?

I'm looking for one on that frontx site you gave me - not found one yet...

    Thanks for your help

If you buy the right card you don't need frontx cables (see new post)

Knock out the 10 hole (see other post)

Yes that is the type of card I linked to - (see picture on new post) has 9 pin header circled.

    Explained in second post

No problem we all have to learn.
