Samsung DVD writer [slim external] model no. SE- S084C
    OS is win7 starter

after connecting the drive through USB port, PnP installs hardware and when i go to “computer” it “sees” the drive (until i insert a disk and close the drawer) when i insert the installation disk that came with my unit, the drive is unable to read the unit. it just sits there making whirling noises, the green light blinks off and on and the drive icon that normally appears when i open “computer”, disappears whenever i close the drive with a disk in it. the drive icon will occassionaly appear briefly and then disappear again.

is this a driver/firmware issue or a \win7 does not support \ issue
have tried Samsung website for community forum/bulletin board but can’t find link for such.. have also tried using their “1step firmware update “ but ran into problems there. have also tried hooking up drive to another computer with win7 prof- same problems . ANY help greatly app.

Does the drive have 2 USB plugs on it? I ask because an external USB drive either needs a power brick or 2 USB plugs (it will use 2 USB ports on the computer) to provide enough power.
I just got an Acer netbook (Win 7 Home Premium). I plugged in my external LiteOn DVD burner and was able to burn 4 recovery disks.
