Hi I have a HP laptop running Windows 7 and i am trying to install Trend Micro Internet Security. I tried to uninstall it but using Norton's uninstall was unsucessfull as did control panel's add/remove programs. This software came with the laptop so is there anyway to remove it or strip it of its duties to allow me to install Trend Micro?

Try tgells suggestion first. The other two are great, I use revo myself. But it's best to start off with NRT at this stage.

The norton removal tool is great for this. Worse case you could remove the Symantec registry key which I've had to do once or twice.

    Good Luck,

After running NRT I still have a couple of Norton folders in my Program Files, they are 'Norton PC Checker' and 'NortonInstaller'.

Can I delete these folders or is there a different way of riding those folders?

Also, I did a search in regedit and it finds heaps of 'Norton' stuff.

As long as you know for sure you no longer have any Norton programs on your computer, you should be okay deleting those two folders. But, I would not mess with the registry. That could lead to a lot of heartache

and you would not notice a difference in performance. If fact, if you did delete all those registry entries, it could actually slow your computer because of a fragmented registry.

Nater324 do you have Ccleaner ? You can effectively and safely clean your registry with it, and clean up junk files . It also has several other useful functions, I have used it for years, on many different computers and operating systems, and have NEVER had a problem with it . If you don't have it, I suggest Ccleaner slim (no extra toolbars or unnecessary stuff)

'NortonInstaller' folder deleted OK but the 'Norton PC Checker' says it cannot delete some files because of the reason given below.

Why is Norton still doing things? How can I delete these files and make sure Norton is completely not running in the background?

Open msconfigand check the Services and startup tabs. If you see anything relating to Norton, uncheck it. Reboot and run the removal tool again.

Very interesting plodr, considering NRT is supposed to stop all Services before starting ...

I don't trust Norton, since Symantec bought the company so even if it says it will stop something, I don't believe it because the tool was written by Symantec.
