Cant Rename desktop items

    For some reason I can no longer rename any items on my desktop, files, folders or shortcuts. The option to rename no longer appears in the context menu and despite searching for an answer I have been unable to find anything related.
    I hope some of you more knowledgeable bods may be able to shed some light on this for me.
    All suggestions gratefully recieved.
