[Win 7 64-bit, about 8 years old and barely updated.]
'Puter gives me the "Windows detected a hard disk problem" warning every couple of minutes.
I've done a fairly thorough back-up and have been trying to run chkdsk on my c-drive.
From both the 'my computer' gui and the command-line I have chosen to schedule a chkdsk /r for the next boot. On both occasions did a full shut-down, waited 10 minutes, booted, watched carefully, and chkdsk doesn't appear to run. Both times I went event viewer>windows logs>application and no event with source 'wininit' was found at all, which confuses heck out of me as I can still boot into windows, use the internet, etc, the which I'd think there'd be SOME wininit event in there, neh? But maybe not, I'm clever but not a true 'power user'...

...anyhow, I guess my next step is either to run SFC and/or to try to run chkdsk from a bootable usb drive: can someone recommend a preferred smallish downloadable to create such a drive, with really clear instructions how to create it, boot into it, and run chkdsk on my c-drive from it (including how to invoke any privilege needed)?
    ...also, any other recommendations?

I am really grateful for the kindness and generosity of the many helpers of the MG community!

Run this batch file and upload the log - it will be on the Desktop.

    Thanks, Eldon: done, and attached.
Between my OP and your reply I ran sfc/ scannow with elevated privileges which returned a log of about a zillion characters, even just counting today's date only.
Am still getting the '...hard disk problem' warning

attaching also the 'today only' edit of the gigantic CBS.log which was returned by the sfc/ scannow operation, also including some reporting on earlier boots which maybe should have initiated the chkdsk but apparently did not. The scannow portion of the log begins around 15:30 and there seems to have been a lot or renaming. Don't know if this helps but here it is, thanks again!

OK, I think this is right, and looks maybe a little better except for 'autochk.exe'... still getting the 'hard disk problem' warning' though... log attached, thanks again for your kind attention!

The autocheck files may well be on the faulty sector of the hard drive (You said hard drive warning showing , again)
This is where there is the chance of using Dism to recover it, among others.
    Hope you followed Eldon's directions.
You really need to consider a replacement hard drive,as repeated hard drive issues can be the guide to a failing hard drive.

    Thanks, guys!
I'm obviously on a learning-curve here and have some questions, I beg your patience:
I'm up for a new laptop pretty soon but hope to limp along on this one for a few more weeks.
If I'm reading the logs and steps correctly, I think the initial SFC I did found a bad sector and moved/replaced a bunch of files, which Eldon's recommended chkdskew.bat and sfc utility supplemented, leading to a current state (as I read the last-uploaded sfclogs.txt) wherein the bad sector has been sequestered and all system-files have been successfully moved to good sectors EXCEPT for autochk.exe, a good copy of which apparently could not be found... so now (I think) DISM is recommended, which, using the elevated command-line 'C:\WINDOWS\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth', will try to retrieve a good copy of autochk.exe from the Windows Update Server (I hope without also attempting to install any updates)... do I seem to have all that about right? ...and is DISM happy doing that on/from my active system-drive?

assuming the aforesaid goes well, I'll then have a clean system drive with 1 or more sequestered bad sectors, right? at which point, living in the SF Bay Area as I do, do I then fulfill Baklogic's recommendation by purchasing a $25 500g drive from Amazon and take it all down to have my local Mom-and-Pop Computer-Shop clone the clean system from my failing drive to the new one and then pop it into the socket, boot up, and compute happily away?

You guys are the greatest <3

Make a backup of any important data/files on dvd/usb- before using dism commands, is always a failsafe.
Usually it will work ok,but it is best to be sure you have saved any important data.
Follow the instructions on that link that Eldon gave you, but if your local computer shop is reasonable, and will clone the hard drive, then that would be better long term. When you clone a hard drive, the bad sectors will not be copied.

Thanks, Baklogic... just to be real clear, as the link Eldon shared refs a lot of different stuff: can one of you confirm that, from an elevated command-line I should enter
    'C:\WINDOWS\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth' ?
...and whether this will be OK even working ON the C-drive FROM the C-drive?
    thanks!

From an elevated Command Prompt you enter:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    Then:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    Then:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Look at the result of each operation.

    OK I did all 3.

For more information, refer to the help."

    ------The ScanHealth command returned:

"................Completed running scanhealth, check logs at %windir%\logs\CBS\Checksur.log"

    ------and the RestoreHealth returned:

    "Error: 87

The restorehealth option is not recognized in this context.
For more information, refer to the help."

Logs attached (Dism Log = 2 excerpts in 1 .txt file)

...with continuing gratitude: what now? ;-)

    Thanks!

Sorry, for some reason I have not been getting e-mails for a short time-or, I have missed them-only just seen the thread again- If you have not solved it yet......
I have not used it for a while, but like most geeks,I usually have the AIK, (OR ADK -Later version for W8-10 ) installed, and, if I remember correctly- you might need to have this installed to use the dism commands properly

    Note the install method
To install the Windows AIK, you must first download the ISO, Write the ISO file to a DVD using a third party tool, and then install the Windows AIK from the DVD. For installation on Windows prior to Windows 7, this download requires that you run genuine Microsoft Windows. Click the Continue button in the Validation Required section to begin the validation process. After validation is complete, you will return to this page to continue the download.

You may be getting the error as your hard drive is damaged- So-if you have not done it already-get that data backed up, and get your hard drive cloned asap.
