    Computer info:

    AMD-K6 3D processor, 400 MHz
    Windows 98 SE
    128 MB ram
Drive C: no compression, no partition
Drive D: External Seagate, no partition or compression, USB interface.

My problem is, suddenly, after a year of use, I can’t save files in Microsoft office 2000 - I only use Word and Excel. I can save to an existing file name, but when I try to save a new file or resave a file to a new name, I get an invalid file name error.

I tried the obvious maneuvers such as setting the default “save to” path and manually typing the path in the save window to no avail. I also ran some tune-up and register cleaning utilities. The ‘puter is running better, but it didn’t help the file saving problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office three times and that didn’t help, either.

Office 2000 is installed on drive C at the moment. Had it on D for a while and that’s where I started having the problem. Don’t know if that’s significant or not since the other programs on drive D run without a hitch.

This has to be some kind of Windows problem, wherein the file format is not being recognized. Unfortunately, it’s way over my head.

Hope someone knows something about this, ‘cause I’m stumped and I’m also getting a serious case of PMS over it, LOL.

    Thanks,
    Sally

Hi Sally :) Two questions. Are you installing/reinstalling from cd? And, when you transferred Office from D drive to C drive do you think somehow you might have lost or deleted a registry key or a dll?

Try running Scandisk and Defrag on C:

OK, thanks. I'll do it. Will have to wait 'till I get home from work, though.

Yes, I am using a CD. I moved it by uninstalling Office first, then installing it in its new location with the CD.

I don't see how I could have lost a dll file, since they are on the CD. But then, what do I know.

The only way I know of that I could have lost a registry key would be an error by the registry cleaner utility. Since those utilities back up before they do anything, I restored from the backup but it didn't help.

I doubt if this is significant, but during the install I got a series of messages (about 6 or 8) that the file on the CD (don't remember if any of them are dlls) is older than the existing file and recommends I keep the existing (newer) file, so I did.

    Still sniveling,
    Sally
