I have updated and rollback uninstalled reinstalled the driver for a usb to serial cable but to no avail. In device manager I get a code 10. With a yellow sign next to my port {com & lpt}. The driver is a Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port. My device wont work and I am sure this is the problem. My device works, because I have used it on this computer. From research I may have a cable that is NOT prolific, but sold as genuine. I dont know. The connectors at the ends of the cable are a translucent blue{my clue that it is a knockoff}. Since the device has worked on the computer I am trying to use now, I know its possible for it to function. The cable does say 2303 on it. But that could mean nothing. pl2303 is what Prolific calls it drivers. I have ran numerous update driver software like DriverMax and SlimDrivers. They say the driver is newest out. I have gone to Prolific website and downloaded ther drivers but nothing. Drivers may not be my problem but I am out of ideas. From reading this type of driver can troublesome. I hope I am even posting this problem in right forum. I figured this was the place. If not I apologize and send me where I need to go. Here is my system specs and by the way if it even matters, the device is a scan tool for the computer systems on cars. I am losing money everyday I dont have this working , so I thank whoever can help me.

I tried everything in the link you gave still no luck. My computer says driver is installed, but when I try to install driver that came with device I get error message that says "InstallShield {R} Setup Launcher" has had a problem and needs to close. Thats new. Also when I try to run device its gives me error message that it doesnt reconize any port number anymore. Tried disable no luck either. I am running Windows xp.

Right click the Device in Device Manager, select properties and under the details tab provide the Vendor and Device ID in the top line after selecting Hardware ID's in the drop down box.

Under Hardware ids it reads there are two lines the first reads "USB\Vid_067B&Pid_2303&Rev_0300" next line reads "USB\Vid_067B&Pid_2303"

Things went smooth when I started to install drivers. It finished and said drivers were installed. No window saying has problem and has to close. In device Manager still has yellow exclamation sign. In properties it reads " this device isnt working properly, Windows cannot load drivers for this device. Code 31. Sorry but still the same. Sorry for such a headache. Any ideas?

I downloaded that file and even though it said XP on the site, the inf files listed it as a Vista driver so I will try and see if I can find an XP driver. I am not sure why you have an exclamation mark next to your lpt port though as this issue is about a com serial port driver.

I found this driver. It is for XP and it has your Vendor and Device ID in the INF file. You will have to Unrar the file to a folder on your desktop in an admin account. Then open Device Manager and Right click the device with the Vendor and Device ID you posted. Under the Driver Tab select Update driver and browse to the folder you unrared on the desktop.

Here is a guide if you have not updated through Device Manager before.

First off thank you Falconattack, Sure do apperciate your input but that didnt help. Had tried that but tried again anyways. But I do thank you! Second off tgell, YOU THE MAN!! {or woman} Worked like a charm!! First it told me that that Wizard couldnt find a better driver than what I had even though I directed it to the rar file. So I had Wizard install anyways and BAM! The little yellow sign went away!! Havent tried device yet, have to hookup to a car and I cant get to that for about an hour. Wanted to tell you thanks sooooo much. I am sure that was problem. I know ir was a pain for such a trivial matter but to me it is my lively hood. Thank you Thank you Thank you!! I know this is an old thread but it came up first while searching for drivers for my (what I believe to be) counterfeit USB to Serial adapter I got off of Ebay.
These are the only drivers that worked for me (after trying several other ones, including the ones listed here in this thread):
    http://www.ifamilysoftware.com/news37.html
I also mirrored the drivers here: http://www.2shared.com/file/vyIfY_77/FakeProlificSerialDrivers.html
It made the adapter work under Windows 7 64-bit.

Hopefully this helps some people out!
