Ive read the "read first" threads, and tutorials the best I can(Computer uneducated, and don't really comprehend alot of it)but I must be missing somthing.I have win98se,All updates installed, ran cws, spybot, and adaware se several times. but spyware keeps comming back. I get changes to registry warning from spybot, and porn redirects constantly.

    OK KODO
I get your drift. I'm a carpenter by trade . I work mostly on new hospitals and make custom furniture at my home shop. If i could fix this with my hammer or planes I would not have asked for help. I'm not highly educated and don't really read well, but the expert skills I have can never be learned here.

Rather than waste anyones time Ive read alot about HJT logs and have done my best to wpork with on my own,but have had little luck. This is the first site that I've seen not wanting the logs posted so I appologize for expecting your tutorial to be the same as others and wasting your time by not fully reading it.

I did as I first stated read the "read first" topic and followed the steps the best I could so as not to waste the experts time. Well most didn't work like they were suppose to. Could be my lack of reading skills or poor education I don't know, whatever it was is beyond my expertise. The steps that preformed like I read them did not cure my problems.

So after going through the topics again I did learn not to post the log,and I'll wait to hear from any one that has the time to lend a hand to a blue collar craftsman

    Hang in there, Smokestak :)

If you read some of the other posts, you'll find a lot of people in the same boat as you! Many of us have been in your shoes and understand your frustration. Rest assured, you came to the right place for help.

I suggest that you carefully follow the steps in the basic spyware removal tutorial that Kodo linked. I know you tried it before, but this time note the steps that you were able to complete and the ones that gave you problems. Also list specific symptoms you've encountered. This will make it easier for the experts to fix you up ;)

    Best luck,
    PP

    Good advice Phillie!

Smokestak, just do what Phillie said. One step at a time try to do what is in the READ ME FIRST thread. If you have a problem doing anything there (like you don't understand how to or it just does not seem to work), come back and tell us where you are at. We will help you get through it.

Please note: running all of these steps does not necessarily mean it will fix your problem. In some cases they do fix the users problems but not in all. The main idea though is to clean all garbage off your PC (not just what you happen to be noticing) and to also get it into a some what known state for us to help you. Don't forget we are not sitting right there and have to have you help us to help you. Those steps help us a lot and they always help users like yourself.

As far as HijackThis logs, we just need procedures to be followed. Using HJT as the first step is a bad idea. It does not tell you problems nor does it perform comprehensive automatic cleanups. It just shows registry values that is is programmed to show and it is up to experts to decipher and decide what actions to take. In many cases it is very important to first use Add/Remove program to uninstall a program (if it has an uinstall), then next try a scanner like Ad-aware SE or SpyBot etc that does scan and perform automatic cleaning, and then the last choice when all else fails HJT this and even sometimes manual editing of the registry is required.

Many Forums have stopped accepting HJT logs all together. And quite a few are now following guidelines similar to ours. And the logs must be posted as a text file attachment to a message as noted in the HJT tutorial.

So start at the beginning of the read me and check for your Microsoft Updates by going to
    http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us

and check for updates required on your PC.
