can't set usb port as a port for printer

hello guys, maybe someone will know something about this issue and can help me

i tried to install new hp 3940 usb printer to old notebook with w98. it has usb port and other usb devices(pendrive) is working well. when after installation with proper set of drivers for w98 i have the option to set printer port i cannot set the usb port as a port for printer. there is option to set virtual driver port on file usbmoon.dll but this option is inactive. i can click on in but after this i canot click on ok button. i also have tried to enter this filename as a virtual port manually but it also don't work. there is olny message that this is an local unknown port and printer don't responding all the time

 

Looks like you may have installed the drivers wrong. With USB devices it is customary to have to install the driver before connecting the device. If you don't have the manual there, get the proper install procedure from the HP web site and follow it exactly. They may have a specail way to clean up after an improper install that you may have to do before attempting a new install.

That's odd, windows 98 should recognize it as a printer just by plugging it in. Does the printer work on other computers?

 

I hope your Win98 is 98SE, because there really wasn't good USB support until then.

If you hook up your printer to the USB and power it up prior to installing the drivers, it may not be recognized by the driver during install. The driver will automatically search for the printer and set up the port if it was installed properly. You shouldn't have to do any manual port setting.
