Hi guys. Not a total noob, but real nooby in Linux.

I burnt an Ubuntu 7.04 iso (took three tries to get a good burn) and ran it live on my secondary machine, an old HP desktop with Celeron 633 processor, 512mb RAM and 15Gb HDD in FAT32 format. I ran the winMd5sum comparison to verify my download and burnt my CD-R using "infrarecorder" which was advised on the Ubuntu download site. Then installed the CD and had it check itself. The first two disks had lotsa errors. The third one finally burnt perfectly.
(I only said all that so you know I'm working with a good disk.)

So when I got it running everything went surprisingly smooth :clap .
So smooth in fact that I got all gung-ho and installed it without even thinking about dual-booting it. :*** But that's gonna be my second question...

First...It won't shut completely down in Ubuntu. I click the button in upper right, get the shut-down menu, click shut-down (completely shut down computer.) It starts to shut down...the tower makes it's shutting down sound, the monitor goes black...then the Ubuntu logo comes back on...as if going to restart...but just sits there. I have to manually press the power button on my box. Any idea how to get it to shut down proper ?

And secondly...when I reinstall my WinME that was on here (which I'm sure to do), is my 15 GB HD big enough for a dual-boot with my WinME and any linux distro? Or will this just have to be an 'either / or' machine?

I do have other questions, but I'll just see if these get answered for now...
    As always, Thanks.

Re: (Still) Can't shut down in Ubuntu, but...

OK I feel kinda stupid. The Ubuntu install successfully dual-booted itself with my WinME and left it intact...I just didn't know where to look for it on start-up  LOL !

And it does shut down properly in Windows, just not in Ubuntu.

But now I'm trying to burn PCLinuxos 2007 on my Win2K machine that I burned the Ubuntu disk on, and have had two back to back failures on the burn. When I boot to the newly burnt disk I scroll down to 'test media' or words to that effect (I haven't tried to actually run PCLos) and after two downloads from separate places, (and burning slower each time), I got the same failure message both times:
"Unable to mount loop file system, commands were: losetup / dev / loop0
    initrd / cdrom / livecd.sqfs mount -r -t squashfs /dev / loop0 initrd / loopfs"
Dropping you to a limited shell.

Sorry if the spacing is wrong 'cos I wrote that out by hand.

PS...the consecutive failures were on the same CD-RW disk (I did erase in between). And the d/l passed the checksum test. I'm gonna try again, this time with a CD-R.

So the questions now are: how to get a proper shutdown in Ubuntu, and how to burn a proper PCLinuxos 2007 iso. Thanks in advance...

    Hi,

I may have some bad news, I too started with a P3 when learning linux, Ubuntu was my first distro ( it seems to be where we all start ). The bad news was my old P3 533mhz computer would not shut down, neither would any other Distro!! I eventually replaced the motherboard with one just as old but different and all these problems went away.

I have no great technical insight into why. All I know is I can sympathize. PClinux OS is a great starting distro, better out the box than Ubuntu. I fear your shut down problems will remain regardless of your distro. If you do load PClinuxOS try disabling ACPI on boot up It didn't help me but it was strongly suggested as a possible resolution.

    Good Luck
