    Hi

I'm running windows xp sp2 and I have run through antivirus, spyware and adware scans and they all come back clean I'm kind of at a loss as to why my pc has all of a sudden just stopped shutting down! If I boot into safemode it shutsdown just fine and I can also shut it down through task manager log off but that's getting a little tedious and I don't trust my 4yr old to even think about it!

When I click to shutdown or restart from the start menu the box closes and then the pc carries on as normal, also if I hit the main power button on the pc it should shut it down but that won't work either but if I am logged off it will shut down ok... So I'm thinking software or a virus? But all scans come back clear!

I can't remember the last time I rebooted my pc, was a week ago or something rediculously long like that! I know it's been rebooted several times since I set up my network though... Anyhow any suggestions you could give would be greatly appreciated

    Thank you in advance :)

Sorry, wasn't paying attention. I am working and listening to other people's problems at the same time.

Ok, this is a simple process of elimination. start re-enabling things, one or so at a time, till you find the culprit, and post back.

Ok what I have done for now is just only put things like my firewall etc back into the startup menu and that seems to be working ok... I don't particularly want to leave it that way though (my clock looks a little lonely :() so if anyone out there does have a solution to this problem I'd be glad to hear it!

Hey, you followed the instructions to do a clean boot fine.

    Not everyone can :)

You will do fine. Try enabling things in chunks of 5.

It appears to be my favourite lazy program :(:( I got to iobit smart defrag and it stopped shutting down... Any good replacements for iobit out there?

Nevermind... I just exit the program first and it shuts down fine :)

Thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated :) :)

I did a search and found this post - since it seems resolved I thought I'd bring it back up and ask a question.

It seems like I have the same problem. Dell, Windows XP SP2. Just the other week it won't "shut off" when I hit start> turn off computer so that eventually I push in the power button for 5 seconds until it powers off.

Does a CLEAN BOOT effect anything on your computer? Never heard of it before.

No, its just a method for narrowing down problems.

    It disables things normally running.

Open taskmanager and see what processes are still running when you try to shut down.

Reboot or shut down PC quickly
For a one-click method to quickly shut down or reboot your system without the fuss of going through the Start menu, make use of the Shutdown command, a command line utility in XP.

Here's how you can set up a restart button on your desktop:

    1. Create a shortcut (Right-click on desktop, select New > Shortcut).

    2. For location, type the following:

    shutdown -r -t 0

    3. Click Next, enter a name for the shortcut ("Restart" is appropriate), and click Finish.

When you click your Restart shortcut, Windows XP will reboot *automagically*!

The "-r" switch tells XP to reboot. If you'd like the shortcut to shut off your PC instead, change it to "-s"; to simply log off, change it to "-l". The "-t 0" sets the timeout (in seconds), so up this value if you find the need for it. To force running applications to close, add "-f" -- be careful with this one!

For more information on Shutdown, type "shutdown" in a command prompt window (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt), or search for Shutdown in Windows XP's Help and Support Center.

Thanks - I tried the shortcut and it immediately played the shutdown sound and went to the blue screen with the windows logo that said "windows is shutting down..." but then it just sat there.

After a few minutes I hit ctrl-alt-del twice to see what would happen and the computer rebooted.

I don't shut off my pc often but there are times you need to/want to.
