Can't start/stop System Restore

My problem is that the service will not start so I can delete all of the former restore points. This is a remnant of a virus I had but is now resolved. The only thing remaining is the System Restore functionality.

    I have done the following:

Tried to start the service through the services window. It will not start "Access denied."

Tried to start/stop/clear the function through My Computer>Properties>System Restore. Got a denial message.

Ran Windows>System32>Restore>srdiag and got several .txt files including one that is 92.7mB. They are:

    • SR-ChgLog.txt 92.7mB
    • SR-EventLogs.txt 17kB
    • SR-FileList.txt 4kB
    • SR-Reg.txt 4kB
    • SR-RP.txt 35kB
    • SR-RstrLog.txt 2kB
I can attach any of these but I think the one is too large. I can edit it to anyone's satisfaction.

I have also run a couple of .reg edit functions to restart System Restore but they did not work.

I need to clear what is there and restart the function so I can start creating new restore points in the future.

    Any help?

    Thanks,

    j

Be careful with this utility because it can cause problems if used incorrectly.

Download D7 and run in an admin account. Under the Repair tab is "Repair System Restore". Click the arrow next to it and let it try to repair.

Where do I extract the files?

What version of Windows are you using? Are you able to start the PC in Safe Mode with Command Prompt?

If so, have you tried starting the service from the command prompt?

For XP, type C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe at the command prompt, and press enter.

For Vista and 7, type rstrui.exe at a command prompt, and press enter.

For both OS, it can take a while for system restore to start (have seen it take several minutes). I have been able to get System Restore started this way on some machines when there was no way to do it via the operating system directly.

    Spad,

Thanks for trying; but it didn't work. Gave the same message I have been getting "System Restore is unable to protect your computer. Reboot your computer and try again."

I tried it through windows w/ command prompt and through the restore console. Neither worked.

    tgell,

Once again you have saved my bacon. Much thanks.

Had to watch the videos to see how the thing works. That is one very impressive, scary, dangerous program. I shall handle with care.

Glad you got it sorted with D7. Thanks for the feedback.
