ok i need help... i've tried just about everything... currently i have no router... just comcast cable to modem to usb... anyways, i want to make the switch to ethernet because its faster and i'll have to do so anyways to set up a router/networking in the future... ive tried just about everything...sp2 patch, registry fix, winsock tools, unplugging modem/turning off computer countless times, different cables, disabling nortonIS, all seem to give me a "limited or no connectivity" when using cat-5 cable, i even tried a different computer (when i did that it kept switching between "a network cable is unplugged" and "acquiring a network address"), only usb gave me connectivity... comcast technicians keep giving me half-*** lame excuses like they can't help me because im not using on of their modems and the problem is with my "software"....... so im just wondering if anyone has any ideas... could it be a defective ethernet port on my modem??

Hello scottyd, Welcome to MGs do you have an onboard NIC ? If not check to see if its firmly seated into its slot, Can you see it in Device Manager ? Are the drivers for your NIC loaded ? Current ? What order did you do your un and re plugging ? Is there a little light on the NIC ?

yeah my nic is built in, lights up, i updated the drivers a week ago, see it in the device manager, and it looks to be fine in there... as for unplugging the modem, i turn off the computer, unplug modem, remove usb, plug in cat5, plug in modem, wait a couple minutes, then boot up my computer...

Other get/borrow a second computer and try first to connect between them to make sure that it is Not Ethernet problem on your computer.

Just for the sake of it and very basic, likely covered but I have to ask, are you sure your cable is good? I would try another cat just to be sure. Did you re-run the inetwiz? I have had to do this when switching from USB to cat. Another thing, make sure your windows firewall didn't kick in on it's own, it will and can block a new connection attempt.

Just some basics but just like me, I over look them sometimes.

I had the same problem with my acer when I got it back from my step kids. My problem was that the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) was switched to manual instead of automatic. Check it out just to make sure. Go to control panel/network connections and right click on the ethernet icon click properties /click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)/properties and make sure obtain an IP address automaticly is checked. Then close everything and reboot. It worked for me and might work for you too.

okay, so i think i know whats going on now... i got the second computer to connect by switching to 10mbps full ... i believe my Intel PRO/100 VE Nework card on the 1st computer is probably fried because i get "a network cable is unplugged" when i switch to 10mbps on there.. thanks for all the help
