I had problems with a trojan, now thats sorted i cant turn windows firewall back on. When i click enable i get the following message "We're sorry. The Security Center could not turn on Windows Firewall. To Try turning on the firewall yourself, go to Windows Firewall in Control Panel. In the Windows Firewall dialog General tab, select On (recommended), and then click OK." when i do this i get the following message "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall Settings." Any ideas?

Have you checked in services that it is set to auto.

Goto Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and look for

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and make sure its started and it's startup type is set to automatic.

Security Center do the same too as well.

then go back and try and start the Windows Firewall.

as a side note... the windows firewall while being fine for blocking incomming data and ports, its about as useful as a chocolate fireguard in blocking any outgoing data from leaving your machine so if your infected with malware, its free to send your personal data to its master.. which is why Zone Alarm, Outpost and Sygate are all much better software firewall options as they block both in and outgoing data.

Thanks Halo, as for using Zone alarm, i used to... but had problems with home networking, reckon i will have a go at using outpost or sygate, is any better than the other, or easier with home networking? do i need to put it on each of the home pcs?

I always liked Outpost as an alternative to ZA.

as to putting a FW on each PC... personally I would as you never know what someone else on the ICS network is downloading, but I refer to one of our resident network gurus FAQs on networks as I dont use them enough to remember all the setup steps.. especially troubleshooting, but do rememeber that in the initial setup stages dont have the firewalls enabled until the network is fully 100% working.
