Can't underclock my CPU

Wasn't sure wether this fits in Hardware or Overclocking, so I posted it in both forums, hope that's not a problem.

I have an AMD Thunderbird 1.33Ghz running on a Gigabyte 7DX mobo.

I'm experiencing some problems with my CPU/mobo/RAM which I won't mention simply because the only way I can solve this is by trial & error as the possibilities are endless.

As part of my attempt to fix my problems I want to underclock the CPU to bring down the tempratures. Using the Easytuner III utility supplied by Gigabyte I tried to underclock to 1200Mhz, 1100MHz and 950Mhz. In all attempts the CPU completely froze.

What can I do to underclock my CPU and why does it freeze?

Why does it freeze? Probably over voltage. When the CPU cycles it changes voltage up and down, the change takes a small amount of time. If you raise the clock speed (increase the cycles) with the same voltage applied, the effective voltage in the CPU drops because it has less time to build. That is why you often need to up the voltage while overclocking. Lowering the cycles gives the voltage more time to build.
Have you tried taking the side cover off the computer and directing a house fan across the opening? Not a permanent fix, but it will tell you if your case is getting too hot.
Be sure to test your power supply voltage with a VOM while runing. Often times really strange crashes are the power supply dipping. If it is severe you will hear the hard drives clicking or shutting down.
Lastly, be sure your computer is grounded properly.

 

wondering how have you narrowed the problem down to "just your cpu"?
