When I try to uninstall Norton Anti-Virus 2002 on a computer in a user that is an administrator, I get this message in a dialog box:

This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator.

What should I do? Norton's website is not helping. THANKS!

Is this a standalone computer, or part of a network?

If it is part of a network, does the network include a domain?

For thoroughness, I would recommend that you visit this link.

It's on a network without a domain. No servers at all here, just peer-to-peer networking.

I tried the uninstall tool in the link that you gave me. It ran, but at the end said that I have to manually uninstall the program manually first.

So, I'm back where I started with the error. poo

Hmm... who's the network administrator? Ask him/her whether they've defined any policies on your system. Could be that they've configured your system so that you can't uninstall the AV app...

There is nothing deliberately placed to forbid installations. I'm trying to find out where to go to see these permissions and make sure they're set right. I've looked under Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management and don't see anything off. I'm wondering if I'm missing something there or if there is another place I should look.

    Windows XP, Norton AV 2002

I think that if a policy WAS defined, it was probably in the GPO

To access it, follow these steps:

    1. Hit windows key + r (or click start --> run)
    2. Type 'gpedit.msc' (without the quotes)
    3. Press enter (or click ok)

This will show you the policies set on the system. However, if no policies were defined as you claim, this is useless to you.

At this point, I would have to recommend you to the malware removal thread.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check it out again tomorrow when I'm back over there. :D

Just out of curiosity, I tried gpedit.msc on my home computer and got an error saying Windows can't find gpedit.msc. I have XP Home edition, which the other computer in question has too. Should I be using regedit instead of gpedit.msc?

If the answer is yes, I already did try regedit and couldn't find anything incorrect in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SYMANTEC/NORTON ANTIVIRUS or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SECURITY. (Maybe something is wrong and I'm not looking at the right things or not recognizing that they're wrong?)

What I'm wondering is if there was something there that I should look for specifically that I'm missing, OR if anyone has a suggestion of somewhere else to look. Also, where is GPO in there?

    Thanks!

Okay, so my problem isn't 100% gone. Norton is gone, but now I can't install anything. Here's my new error:

The MSI Installer is currently disabled via Group Policy. Please change this policy before attempting this action again.

    Where do I enable this?

    Anybody have a clue?

I got rid of Norton 2003, but now I can't install anything else. Here's my new error:

The MSI Installer is currently disabled via Group Policy. Please change this policy before attempting this action again.

    Where do I enable this?

    Windows XP Home
    Networked, but no server involved
