Can't update ram.

Hi,

My problem is i can't get 1Gb stick to work. My computer starts up and doesn't get past the ram check.... I checked the manual at Msi and they reckon that it can run double sided modules (which the new one is), any amount upto 2gb and installed in any of the slots in any order, double and single sided. I checked that the memory is the correct type, it is the same type as i have in my pc now. I have tried the 1gb by itself, with 256 i already had, in different slots, pc works fine with ram in before and registers 256mb in each slot (checked at www.crucial.com) they scan to check motherboard etc.
I thought that maybe the ram doesn't work but i have already returned one to www.novatech.co.uk. The broken one made a black screen on my pc appear and said windows has closed unexpectedly and which start up did i want to use (none worked till i took the duff ram out)
Novatechs online manual thingy about ram reckons that maybe i need to update my bios..... this looks quite scary. When in my Bios it has at top of screen AMIBIOS 3.31a? and also on opening screen to pc when paused says Via tecnologies inc VIAVT8237 serial ata raid bios setting utility V4.31. I have downloaded what i think is correct bios from Msi, but don't want to try if it is not the problem.

My current pc AMD 64 3000
Motherboard Ms6741 (microstar) only has 2 slots for ram.
2 modules of 256 mb ram pc2700 333 mhz 184 pin
Windows xp
Radeon 9550 video card
