Can't update XP

Avast
Spybot
Windows firewall

This is one of a number of problems I'm having.

I go to windows update web site click Express then get error screen
Error number: 0x80248011.

Clicking on automatic updates in control panel and the box takes a few minutes to appear. When it did appear tried to switch off auto updates and it finally did it after about 5 minutes. Went back to windows update site but still getting Error number: 0x80248011

In windows security center it says auto updates off (good), however it say virus protection is off when Avast anti virus is on.

BITS is started. Any ideas as to these problems? TIA

 

Clear the IE cache and try updates again.

Done all that but not made any difference.

Same error message from update site. Error number: 0x80248011

Security center still not seeing Avast.

Now can't open Auto updates in control panel.

Suggestion 2 seemed to cure the download problem and auto updates now opens ok.

Virus protection in security center still showing as off, looks like that is unrelated to update xp problem.

Do you have Avast updated?

yes avast was updated, but still security center says virus protection off.

Uninstalled Avast but then had problems trying to download from Avast web site so downloaded AVG, virus protection now on, so looks like another problem sorted.
