Can't use scandisk on XP home edition....

Here's whats happened. I went to C drive tools and checked "scan disk for errors" and resarted my machine and went to bed. This morn all I had was an error blue screen. When I try and start the machine again, it trys to scan the disk again and freezes up on "step 2 of 3 verifying indexes".... always on 12 or 13%. So, I restarted it in "last good config for your machine" and got a good start although I'd lost all personal settings!!! I went to system tool/system restore and back to yesteday's settings but now it still won't scandisk!!/ fix any problems although it seems to be working fine as I write. What have I done?? How can I use the scandisk utility again, I worked just fine a week ago...

Scandisk operations can be interrupted by screen savers and other automated processes. Prior to starting a scandisk temporally disable your screen saver and other automated processes.

 

If you use chkdsk with the /f switch ( Fixes errors on the disk. ) from the command line it will tell you that it will run on restart if there is a file open or in use. This will mean that when it reboots nothing will be holding the disk and it cannot be interupted and will be able to get down to work.

This will attempt to fix any errors it finds with your disk though.

You could always boot to the recovery console from a windows CD and run chkdsk from there
