Can't use windows update

I cleaned about 40 viruses and malware off a friend's computer. I feel it's clean except for the fact I can't run windows update. I searched around and found the likely problem, but don't know how to fix it. When I did services.msc and checked out windows updates/preferences, the path to execute is listed as %fystemroot%...... The "f" has replaced the "S" in System. I don't know where to go to change this back.

This is a windows XP machine.

Hi oldjhawk :wave and welcome... With you stating you "cleaned about 40 viruses and malware off a friend's computer", I think you should check into the Malware section also... Might want to check this out, and get the opinion from one of them , and for sure, you must be patient, as they will get to you too... After you post yoru logs, have a look around.. Plenty here to keep ya busy reading, for sure. Good Luck to ya, those malware people are the best.... If it were me, I'd get the "all clear" first too....

* Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
* If you cannot boot in Normal Boot mode but your PC runs in safe boot mode, you can ignore our note about Normal Startup and just complete as much as you can in safe boot mode. Some programs may not install in safe boot mode.
* If you cannot download required programs on the infected PC, download them using another PC and copy them to the infected PC via CD or USB drive
