captureing video/audio from desktop

yeah, i was wondering if there was a program that could capture video and audio off of my desktop. like, if i was at a site and a really cool animation with sound came up or somen, and i couldnt save it, the program would just let me select the area i wanted recorded and record it. soudns wierd to me, but im sure some one has something like that.
