    Good day helpers,

First, I apologize if this is not the correct forum for my issue; if not, maybe you can tell me where to go - like my wife does.

Running XP Pro SP3, Dual Core Intel E8500 with 3 GB memory. I don't know whether you need more info for the questions below.

    1. My card reader (under Device Manager I see it says it's a generic SD reader) has stopped working. When I insert my camera's XD memory card the light above it goes on but the drive does not register in explorer and hence nothing appears on my screen.

    2. I also notice in Device Manager that I have a yellow exclamation mark under "OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller" but I am not sure this is related to the above. If it is or it isn't how do I eliminate the exclamation mark?

And while I am in this forum could you tell me what "yes, post a poll with this thread" means.

Thx for any suggestions and enjoy whatever 2011 has in store....

    Greetings, chatrang.

The card reader can very well be affected if the Host Controller is showing flags - most likely, a chipset reinstall is in order.

We need more info: what's the make and model # of your machine, and/or the make and model # of your motherboard?

If that info is not readily available, then please download and run Free PC Audit, a stand-alone system information tool.

(If you get a Security Warning, don't worry about it - uncheck the 'Always ask before opening this file' box, and click 'Run').

When the scan completes, click File > Save As, name the file 'Report', and save to an easily found location, such as your Desktop.

Then attach that file to your next post per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

Your report is showing an ASUS P5QL-EM motherboard, so first let's try this:

Go to this ASUS page. In the dropdown boxes, plug in 'Motherboard', 'Socket775', and 'P5QL-EM', designate 'Windows XP', and expand the 'Chipset' tab. Download the Intel Chipset Inf Update Program V9.1.1.1014, install it, and reboot.

After the reboot, see if your device manager flags have changed and if the card reader still has issues.

    Hi

If the above doesnt work then in Device Manager double click that yellow ! mark you have to open properties then click the Hardware Tab, then in the dropdown choose Hardware Ids and in the value box cut and paste the text into your next post.

I have followed Caliban's suggestions. No change. Still the same issues. In reply to DavidGP when i go to Properties on the yellow marked ohci controller there is no 'hardware' option. However, I did find 'hardware ids' but I cannot copy and paste the info. in its window so I've attached a printscreen.

Hope this helps the issue.... Thx.

Hi, chatrang - happy New Year.

Try this real quick: on that properties page, click the 'Driver' tab, then click the 'Update Driver' button. Let us know the results.

If that doesn't produce results, here's another shot:

The hardware ID indicates that the host controller and card reader are manufactured by the JMicron company. You might try their downloads available for the controller and the card reader.

    Hi

Sorry had a brain dead day yesterday and indeed no hardware tab as I should have said Details tab, but you should be able to highlight the data in the value box and right click and copy.

Howver I typed the text and this should be the driver HERE its a JMicron (tested link at time of this post and file is live and downloads ok)

EDIT: slightly slower that Caliban today ;)

    Greetings!

Thx Caliban and DavidGP for your quick responses. I have downloaded and istalled the JMicron controller and the yellow ! has indeed disappeared. However, my card reader still does not work. The blue light flashes on as I insert the memory card but nothing appears on the screen and the drive is not recognized in Explorer. This SD drive has worked well and only in the last little while has it given me the finger. I have not installed any new programs for quite a while so I am not sure what is going on. Don't know it this info. helps.

Furthermore, I did notice that Caliban gave me both a controller and a card reader to download. Both, by the way, are identical downloads. Are they supposed to be different?

    Hi

Boot into safe mode (f8 at boot) and see if the reader is recognised. Btw did you reboot after installing the driver, as at times they are only recognised and 100% working after a reboot.

What security apps do you have installed, disable and try the card reader.

    1. Yes, I have rebooted each time. I have F-Secure installed (that and other info is on the pcaudit file that I submitted to you) which I disabled. No difference. Next, I tried safe mode. Nothing. Then I tried a different memory card in a different slot. Nothing. Device Manager shows me the various readers under disk drives and the light in the card reader does go on when I insert the memory card. Very peculiar.

    2. In my last post I asked whether the controller download and the card reader download from JMicron (as suggested by Caliban) were supposed to be different because both downloads were one and the same.

    Thx for your continued help....

    Hello,
Sorry to barge in but the downloads that Caliban gave are different. One is for the card reader which was

    Code:
     ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/CardReader/Windows/JMB38X_WinDrv_R1.00.50_WHQL.zip
The other was for the 1394 controller which was

    Code:
    ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/1394/Windows/JMB38X_WinDrv_R1.00.17_WHQL.zip

Thx, tgell. I appreciate the clarification. I re-downloaded both, installed and rebooted. No change, unfortunately.

What events occurred when you unzipped and installed the card reader package? Did the setup do anything at all?

Both the controller and the card reader unzipped and installed in identical fashion. For each, the Wizard came up, I clicked on install and apparently it installed and I clicked finish.

Having problems trying to figure out why the reader isn't working. Is this an OEM machine, or is it homemade?

    Hi

Just try this first and enter Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management then click Disk Management and see if your Card Reader shows up, if it does then right click on its entry and choose Chaneg Drive Letters and Paths, then choose a letter like X Y or Z as unlikely they are being used so far (as maybe a conflict with another device) and a warning will show but click past it.... just wondering of your card reader shows in Disk Management and this maybe the simple fix,

BUT not all devices show in Disk Management if a media card/device is not in the drive (so if you have no data on a card or data you can backup on another PC or you are willing to possibly loose the data then try with a card in the drive and see if it shows up).

F-secure yes (I dont use that PCAudit app personally but cheers now know the data it holds) however you also have Spybot, Malwarebytes ,Superantispyware, Winpatrol all installed also, any one of these could theoretically block an install, especially Spybot as it can block registry entries, so disable all and try again with the install of the drivers and then reboot and with the security apps still off see if the card reader works.

I did notice SanDisk USB SSFDC Ver 1.01 in your Add/Remove list, what device does this link too? likely offhand its a Sandisk USB Cruzer pen, but I'm not used to these devices to know if you can easily remove and re-install that software (maybe someone else does) as again a possible conflict with this driver.

The computer was put together for me by a neighbourhood, trustworthy computer company, not a big box story item. I can always take it in for them to check but I don't like doing that unless I have attempted a fix myself with help from professionals like you....

Do try DavidGP's suggestions - card readers can be quite finicky.

Another quick question - is the unit a separate piece of equipment installed in a bay, or is it built in to the front panel?

The fact that the reader 'stopped working' leads me to believe that some other component may be causing the problem, possibly motherboard connection or cabling.

  21. chatrang

    chatrang Private E-2

Thx very much indeed to everyone who tried to help out with this issue. The unit is part of my computer front panel so, like Caliban, I began to suspect other components were causing the problem. But the card reader is now working. I don't know which of the following steps was the "cure" but here's what I did:

    1. Removed my FSecure (from ISP Cogeco) completely. A hefty program that slowed my computer down and ran a number of processes in the background.
    2. Ran several malware removal programs online and from my own installed base to make sure I was clean. Ran CCleaner and FlashCookieCleaner as well.
    3. Installed Avira as the antivirus and Comodo as the firewall.
    4. Downloaded installed and ran AutoFix.exe from Microsoft and ran the 'repair' on the card reader drives.
    5. Took a couple of shots of vodka.

Bottom line: my card reader now works. With your help I know at least I have the latest drivers and no more yellow ! anywhere showing in Device Manager. Sheeeesh.

    Cheers to all!
