I have a multi-format reader (internal) in my tower running Win7 X64 Home Premium, and if I open "Computer", none of the 'drives' show up until I actually pop a card into the slot. If you go to Disk Management and scroll down a bit, you should see all the 'drives' supported by the reader. To access Disk Management: right click "Computer", select "Manage", select "Disk Management" near the bottom of the leftt pane in the "Computer Management" window, the drives will be listed in the bottom half of the right pane. You can also check the Device Manager under the Disk Drives category (see screen shot below) to see if the PC is recognizing the device as it should. To access the Device Manager: right click "Computer", select "Properties", click "Device Manager" in the left column at the top.

Absolutely.... internal or external, they both use the USB ports and will be listed the same, and will function the same.
    ;)
