    HI all.

    My card reader has recently started acting up, or not working to properly state it.

    I haven't used it for reading Compact flash card in quite some time and when I put in the CF card- windows made the normal sound it makes when a device is attached and recognized, but the pop up windows said it wasn't able to read the device. It also said go to some website for help- which I did and didn't get anywhare so i exed out. Next time I tried to put in the card- nothing - nada

    After hours on the phone with geek squad(no help) and issue related searches, I was able to find some advice on the web that helped- temporarily.

    what i did was go to-

    *control panel
    * administrative tools
    * services
    * smart card
    it was here that I noticed that the service had been stopped- now the advice I found said to start it again manually and then reboot-
    did that-
    still didn't work so i went back into control panel -smart card again said it was stopped. hmm
    so I started it again manually and this time didn't reboot- IT WORKED! the Card Reader acted normally over the next several hours- that was yesterday.

    today I tried it again and same thing-
    funny thing this time was the card reader was working even when Smart Card said it was started.

    I again got it to read the card but only after a couple of reboots-

    I noticed in the Smart Card service, it said that the service depended on another service called Plug and Play. Could it be Plug and Play that is fowling things up?

    Any help here would be fantastic! thanks!!

    Go here: http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm
    and check all the services BlackViper has listed (you will have some he doesn't show). Make sure that each service is set to the Default for whatever version you have.
    Please note that you can remove all the extra columns you do not need and only show 3 columns: Display Name, Service Name and your version of Vista.
    To hide the extra columns, just click on the titles ABOVE the chart. The green will change to red and the column will disappear.
    You can also change the way his site displays. Black is too hard on my eyes, so I click on Green over at the top left.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Could you explain how to make sure that each service is set to the Default for whatever version I have? I'm a bit confused with that one.

    Open Control panel, click on Administrative Tools. When that opens, click on Services. There you will see all the Services (MS as well as any other added by other programs and hardware).
