I have a card reader which I have used in the past without problems. The "drives" are not showing up in winexplorer/my computer, but appear in device manager and are listed as working. I had this happen a long time ago and had to remap them using disk manager, which worked fine.

The problem is, now when I try to change the drive letter via disk manager, I get this message: "The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management or restart the computer."

I have tried refreshing, I have tried rescanning, I have tried closing/reopening Disk Management, and I have tried rebooting the computer, all to no avail.

I am running Vista. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Did you try to use System Restore to restore your system back prior to when this problem began?

It's been a looooooong time since they showed up (I haven't used the card reader in a while, so didn't really worry about it). There is a lot of stuff I wouldn't want to revert back that far on my system. I can't believe there isn't a less drastic solution.

    Hi

What make and brand Card Reader is this, is it built into a PC from say HP, DELL etc if so what make and model of PC is it, also if a 3rd party USB Card reader whats its make and model?

Thoughts are that you have faulting drivers and that is why this device is not showing up, so you can either re-install the drivers again and/or delete them from Device Manager and then re-install.

It's an ibuypower pc (custom built), but the order (from back in early 2007) doesn't specify the brand, it just says 12-in-1 card reader. Device manager says it's using Microsoft drivers (I'm using Vista). I check Windows update, but there are no new updates listed for the card reader.

If I uninstall from Device manager, will Windows recognize it as "new" hardware? There are like 6 readers listed in device manager under drives (all part of this 12-in-one).

    Hi

If it was Windows that originally installed the mass drivers for those devices, then indeed it should pick them up again, but to as usual be on the safe side use this Driver Backup app to backup the drivers.

Did ibuypower give you any driver cds? if they did check to see if any media reader drivers are present, what you could also do is use Everest to see if the devices have any names for Media Readers, will be located in Storage > Windows Storage, they may though come up as "Generic" as some 12in1s do.

I'm going to try to dig through my stuff at home and find the cds/documentation that came with the computer to see if the reader disc is there. Otherwise, thanks so much for the driver backup link. I will try that and let you know how it goes. May take a few days before I post back, since I work late hours.

Found the cd, but it's for XP, so I will have to try uninstalling/reinstalling in device manager. Will post results later.

Ugh, I backed up the drivers, uninstalled from device manager, got a message saying the drivers had been reinstalled, but the drives STILL don't show up in winexplorer and I STILL get that message from disk manager. Help! :cry
