Card reader won't read SD card

I bought a new higher capacity SD card (Kingston 1.0GB) for my digital camera. I can transfer the photos off of it using the cord, but the card reader on my computer won't just accept the card. When I click "my computer" it shows that it's in the drive but I can't access it. I just assumed an SD card reader would read any SD card. How am I supposed to know ahead of time which cards will be compatible with my reader? Or am I just doing something wrong?
